The ISO-9000 standards are implemented through the establishments of a Quality Management System, (QMS) which consists of Quality Policy, Quality Objectives, processes, procedures and review of the system. QMS is outlined in the form of a quality manual, which reflects management's commitment to quality and provides necessary documentation to meet all requirements of ISO-9000 standards. Quality manual is supported by procedures, work instructions and quality records. The procedures address the requirements of standard and the practices being followed within the organization. ISO-9000 first published in 1987 later amended in 1994 is in practice now. ISO-9000 consists of three main standards.
ISO-9000 series of standards are further revised with new revision being called ISO-9000:2000 for which draft standards are prepared and is under finalization stage. With this revision there would be only ISO-9001:2000 standard in use. ISO-9002 & ISO-9003 will be withdrawn. ISO-9001: 2000 would place higher emphasis on customer needs and expectations with the aim of achieving better customer satisfaction. An ISO-14001 standard for Environment Management System (EMS) enables the industry to face the competitive challenges and contribute to National/Global economy through resource reduction and waste minimization in addition to protection of environment.
